Lee Sang-deok, Commissioner of the Overseas Koreans Agency, warmly welcomed and encouraged Zainichi Korean children visiting their ancestral homeland.
At the opening ceremony of the 2025 Zainichi Korean Children’s Jamboree held on July 28 at Olympic Parktel in Seoul, Commissioner Lee said, “The parents and grandparents of those here today made remarkable contributions to Korea’s growth and progress. In particular, the success of the 1988 Seoul Olympics would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the Zainichi Korean community.”
He continued, “I hope this jamboree allows you to experience firsthand how much Korea has developed. I also encourage you to make many Korean friends and continue visiting your homeland, so your ties with Korea grow even stronger.”
He also introduced the role of his agency to the young participants, saying, “The Overseas Koreans Agency is here to support Koreans living abroad.”
The jamboree, hosted by the Central Headquarters of the Korean Residents Union in Japan (Mindan), has been held biennially since 2001. Around 200 Zainichi Korean children in grades 4 to 6 from across Japan participate in the program.
The opening ceremony was attended by Commissioner Lee Sang-deok; Kim I-jung, Head of Mindan Central Headquarters; Ha Hyung-joo, Chairman of the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation; Lee In-kyun, Vice President of Shinhan Financial Group; and other officials.
