On October 31, the LA Korean Education Center (Director Kang Jun-hoon) hosted a presentation by LoveKo, a student union founded by Cypress High School seniors Kim Da-eun, Lee Hye-in, and Shim Yoon-hwan, who led the initiative to open a Korean language class at their school. As LoveKo's first official activity, the students shared their journey and future plans with a visiting group of principals from Korea.
During the presentation, the three students explained their motivations and the steps they took to open the Korean language class. They highlighted the challenges they overcame and the factors that contributed to their success, emphasizing the significance of a student-led approach in contrast to the traditional teacher or school district-driven methods for introducing Korean language courses.
In particular, the students received enthusiastic applause from the 43 principals when they introduced their initiative to go beyond establishing a Korean language class at Cypress High School. Through LoveKo, they aim to promote Korean culture through various activities, such as learning the Korean language and watching Korean movies and dramas.
The students plan to continue their efforts by distributing a student manual titled How to Open a Korean Class at Our School to peers in neighboring schools. They are also recruiting members to expand their vision.
One of the principals in attendance expressed admiration for the students’ meticulousness and persistence, stating, “Seeing the students' initiative and perseverance was truly inspiring.” The principal added, “It was a reminder of the importance of educators taking an interest in students' desires and encouraging students to take ownership of their learning.”
