The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST, Minister Yoo In-chon) is supporting the construction of a new library for children and youth in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, as part of Korea’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) initiative.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the library’s annex building was held on March 26 at the Ulaanbaatar City Public Library. Attendees included MCST Regional Culture Policy Director Song Yoon-seok, Korean Ambassador to Mongolia Choi Jin-won, Mongolia’s Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth Nomin, and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar Nyambaartar, who gathered to celebrate the launch of the project.

Originally built in 1980, the Ulaanbaatar City Library has long served as a hub of knowledge for local citizens. However, it is now primarily used by adults and suffers from outdated infrastructure. To address this, a new annex building will be constructed by 2026, designed specifically for children and youth.

The new facility will span 2,300㎡ over four floors, featuring eco-friendly and barrier-free design for accessibility to all age groups. Key spaces will include children’s rooms, youth reading areas, digital media rooms, and a Korean collection room. Korea will also provide books and equipment to support the library’s development.

In addition, Korea will offer training programs for Mongolian library managers and staff, including invited training in Korea and expert dispatch education, aimed at improving service quality and promoting stronger cooperation between Korean and Mongolian library professionals.
