Commemorating the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, the 14th Brazil Korean Film Week was held from June 12 to 19 at the REAG Belas Artes, an arthouse cinema in downtown São Paulo.

The event was hosted by the Korean Cultural Center in São Paulo (Director: Kim Cheol-hong) in collaboration with Pandora Filmes, one of Brazil’s leading independent film distributors.

This year’s festival took the theme of “80 Years of Liberation”, featuring a diverse lineup of films set during the Japanese colonial period and Korea’s liberation. A total of 22 Korean films—15 feature-length and 7 short films—were screened for Brazilian audiences.

On the evening of the 12th, a cocktail opening reception took place in the theater, elevating the atmosphere. It attracted numerous Korean film industry figures, Brazilian film professionals, critics, and journalists, reflecting strong local interest in Korean cinema.

The official screening began at 7 p.m. with “The Age of Shadows”, a spy drama directed by Kim Jee-woon, as the opening film. Director Kim attended the opening ceremony in person and received a warm round of applause from the audience.

He remarked, “The Age of Shadows tells the story of people who did not lose hope amid the turmoil of the Japanese occupation. I hope Brazilian viewers will gain insight into Korea’s historical struggles and spirit through this film.”
